In 2004, she coined the ‘Aishwarya Rai Foundation’ to help and support needy people in India. Also, in 2008, she laid the foundation of a special school for underprivileged girls in a village called Daulatpur in Uttar Pradesh.
Supports PETA India
After hearing about the plight of an endangered black rhino who was sold for a “canned hunt” (in which animals are confined so that hunters can easily shoot them), Aishwarya penned a heartfelt letter on PETA’s behalf asking that the animal be released to a sanctuary.
Supports Various Causes
She has supported many causes like AIDS and HIV, Marrow and Organ Donation, Mentally and Physically challenged people, etc. She is the ambassador of Smile Train, a foundation that helps children with a cleft lip or a palate. Her work with Smile Train focuses not only on India but in 76 different developing countries across the globe.
The actress celebrated her 20th anniversary of winning the Miss World pageant by sponsoring cleft surgeries of around 100 children. In addition to financing, she visited the children in the hospital and spent time interacting with them.
UN Microcredit Spokesperson
In 2005, Aishwarya was appointed a spokesperson for the International Year of Microcredit, raising the consciousness of the main goals and priorities of the United Nations’ poverty alleviation efforts.
